Malwan Rawats of Paino (Malla Salan, Lansdowne Tehsil) are originally from Udaipur Dhangu or Gangasalan. The folk saying about Malwan Rawat migrating to Paino Patti is as under.
Malvan Rawat clan originally belonged Kharak group or those who had ample of buffalo herds. Malvan Rawat were rich in Udaipur- Dhangu as they had hundreds of buffalo herds. Once, there was drought and at the same time there was political unrest in Udaipur-Dhangu. It was difficult for getting fodders for buffalos in the region. Malvan families started taking their buffalos in search of fodders towards Bhabhar. First, they reached to Dadamandi or Matiyali region of Langur and Sheela Pattis for grazing their buffalo herds. There they had cordial relationship with Devrani Pundits of the region. Malvan Rawat families were happy for getting superior fodder than Udaipur –Dhangu.
However, after some time, there was shortage of fodders in Matiyali-Dadamandi region. Malvan Rawat families were worried by shortage of fodders. They migrated towards Bhabhar or today’s Kotdwara region. It was rainy season that tens of children of Rawat families started dying in Bhabhar region. Rawat families took help of original local tribe Boksa of Bhabhar who advised them to migrate towards Paino Patti (near Kolagarh). First, Rawat families did not agree to migrate towards Paino. Paino was called the region of prisoners and criminals. It was said that Shrinagar King used to send criminals in exile in Paino region. However, when the families were losing their children by unknown disease Rawat families’ older people agreed to migrate from Bhabhar to Paino Patti. Boksas guided Rawat families to walk towards Paino Patti from Kotdwara Bhabhar. First Malvan Rawat families settled in Jaskot village of Paino. There they met Jetha Rawat families who were also migrated from Udaipur-Dhangu region to Jaskot. However, Jaskot did not suit to people and buffalos due to mosquitoes.
Malwan Rawat families migrated to Malan region above in higher height than Jaskot. After sometime, Malvan and Jetha Rawat felt the need of Pundit. Both invited Devrani family from Matiyali region and offered them land in Jethya village to settle there. Later on Mlavan Rawat and Jetha Rawat became Thokdar of the region.
